The CSHA Horsemastership Program, is an educational initiative designed to enhance equine knowledge and riding skills. It caters to riders of all ages and experience levels, providing a structured environment to learn and compete.
The program assesses participants through three main components:
Written Test: Evaluates knowledge on horse anatomy, health, grooming, safety, and horsemanship principles. Study materials include The Horseman’s Handbook and relevant CSHA rulebooks.
Riding Test: Participants perform discipline-specific patterns in categories such as:
English I (includes jumping)
English II (flat only)
Western (Stock Seat)
Gymkhana (barrels and poles)
Combined (a mix of disciplines)
Grooming Test: Assesses proficiency in grooming and handling, with adjustments based on English or Western tack. Â
The purpose of participating in the CSHA Horsemastership Program is multifaceted, offering both educational and personal development benefits for horse enthusiasts. Here are the main reasons why individuals participate:
Participants deepen their understanding of horsemanship, including horse care, anatomy, tack, and safety.
The program challenges riders to develop riding proficiency in a variety of disciplines such as English, Western, and Gymkhana.
It promotes well-rounded equestrian knowledge through written, riding, and grooming tests.
Riders work toward achieving measurable milestones, which can be motivating and fulfilling.
Success at regional and state levels builds confidence and self-discipline.
The program provides structured competition in a supportive environment, allowing participants to test their skills.
Winners at state level receive scholarships and awards, which can support further education or equestrian goals.
Leadership and Sportsmanship
Riders learn to conduct themselves with integrity, responsibility, and respect, both in and out of the arena.
The program emphasizes sportsmanship, collaboration, and community involvement.
Junior participants that qualify & compete at state finals can earn significant scholarship money (up to $1,500), which can assist with college or equine-related expenses.
It strengthens college and resume applications, especially for students pursuing animal science, veterinary work, or equine studies.
Riders become part of a larger community of equestrians, building friendships and professional connections.
Involvement in CSHA fosters lifelong learning and mentorship within the horse world.
In short, the program is designed not just to measure horsemanship, but to nurture the growth of well-rounded, knowledgeable, and capable horse people.
