Although we currently have a Trail Trials program in place, we do not have any events scheduled at this time. Our team is actively working on this, so we appreciate your patience! In the meantime, riders can engage in other activities, and our region chair will still submit paperwork to the state office to ensure our riders can qualify for the finals!
CSHA Trail Trials are one of the California State Horsemen’s Association’s most popular and educational programs, designed to simulate real-world trail riding challenges in a competitive but supportive environment.

Trail Trials are judged trail rides where horse and rider teams navigate a natural outdoor course that includes a variety of obstacles commonly encountered on the trail.
The goal is not speed, but precision, control, and horsemanship.

Obstacles might include:
Water crossings
Log crossings or step-overs
Gates
Steep ascents/descents
Dragging objects (e.g. a raincoat, log, etc.)
Mounting from the ground or an obstacle
Judging

Each obstacle is judged individually.
Riders are scored on:
Horsemanship
Safety
Horse’s willingness and calmness
Execution of the obstacle
Penalties may be given for refusals, unsafe actions, or failing to complete an obstacle.
Who can participate?

Open to riders of all levels, from youth and beginners to experienced competitors.
Riders can compete for year-end points, awards, and State Championships.
Horses must be sound, under control, and safe.
